In – office psychotherapy is usually covered by insurance provided the therapist is in-network. However, it is important for you to understand that the therapy must be deemed “medically necessary”. This means the recipient of the services will receive a diagnosis that will be charted on a medical record. Some people are not comfortable with this idea and may opt not to use their insurance.
Some issues that people come to therapy for are, unfortunately, often not considered “medically necessary”. Couples therapy is often not considered a medical necessity. If you would like to be seen with your partner and use your insurance, keep in mind that the number of sessions may be limited and that one of you will need to have a medically charted diagnosis.
Virtual/online psychotherapy is sometimes covered by insurance under special circumstances. If you feel that this is the only solution for you it is best to call the member services number on the back of your card and explain why you are need counseling in this format and ask them to authorize the sessions.
